OCR NUTRITION: FUELING FOR DISTANCE, TERRAIN AND ALTITUDE.
One of the biggest mistakes I see in obstacle course racing is athletes treating nutrition like it’s the same race every weekend. A Sprint isn’t a Beast. A Beast isn’t an Ultra. Yet far too many people eat the exact same breakfast, throw the same gel in their pocket, and hope fitness covers the difference. Sometimes it does. Most of the time, it doesn’t. You don’t fuel a 45-minute race the same way you’d fuel something that could keep you on the mountain for eight or nine hours.
For shorter races like a Sprint or Super, your nutrition should be about showing up with full glycogen stores rather than trying to eat your way through the race. If you’ve eaten well the day before and had a solid breakfast a couple of hours before the start, you probably don’t need much beyond water and maybe a small amount of carbohydrate if you’re pushing the front of the field. More people have ruined a Sprint by stuffing themselves with energy products than by running out of fuel.
Once you move into Beast territory, the conversation changes. Glycogen becomes a limited resource instead of something you can ignore. Waiting until you’re hungry is already too late. Small amounts of carbohydrates throughout the race—whether that’s gels, chews, drink mix, or real food you’ve trained with—can help keep both your legs and your brain working when fatigue starts making simple obstacles feel impossible. OCR isn’t just an endurance event. It’s a decision-making event. Miss one hand placement because your mind is foggy, and you can throw away minutes instead of seconds.
Then there’s the Ultra, where nutrition almost becomes another discipline entirely. The strongest athletes don’t just manage pace. They manage calories, hydration, electrolytes, and stomach comfort for hours. Eating a lot at one aid station rarely works. Consistently eating small amounts before you feel depleted usually does. Every Ultra athlete eventually learns the same lesson: the race isn’t won by whoever can suffer the most. It’s often won by whoever can keep eating.
Altitude changes the equation even more. Here in Colorado, your body loses fluid faster than most people realize because every breath carries away more moisture in the thinner, drier air. Even when you don’t feel sweaty, you’re dehydrating. Your heart rate climbs faster, perceived effort increases, and many athletes notice their appetite disappears despite burning more energy. That’s a dangerous combination. If you’re traveling from sea level, you can’t just copy what worked back home. Hydration needs to start days before the race, electrolytes become even more important, and carbohydrate intake often matters more because your body relies more heavily on it when oxygen availability drops.
The other mistake I see is athletes experimenting on race day. New gels. New hydration mixes. Energy drinks someone handed them at the expo. OCR already throws enough variables at you with weather, terrain, obstacles, and elevation. Your nutrition shouldn’t be another unknown. Whatever you plan to eat during a race should have already survived your long runs and training sessions. Training your stomach is just as important as training your grip.
Fitness gets you to the start line. Nutrition often determines whether that fitness is still there at the finish. If you’re preparing for obstacle course racing, stop asking what everyone else eats and start asking what your body performs best on over the exact distance, terrain, and elevation you’re about to face. That’s where real race-day nutrition begins.
