Start where you are. ELEVATE beyond.
We brought our Midwest OCR roots to Colorado
HartFit’s story began in the Midwest, where obstacle course racing was more than an occasional mud run. It was a community built around technical obstacles, challenging courses, endurance, and people willing to test themselves.
Illinois has long been one of the country’s most active states for OCR. Races such as Abominable Snow Race, Highlander Assault, Frontline OCR, and The Midwest OCR helped give Midwest athletes a deep and varied racing calendar. Add races like War X in Ohio and Mythic Race in Missouri, and you can see how much obstacle racing has grown across the heartland.
We’re proud to have helped establish that kind of OCR culture in the Midwest. Now we’re bringing that same passion to Colorado.
At HartFit, our focus includes Cross Country OCR: obstacle course racing at distances of 3K and above, where running and terrain are part of the challenge alongside the obstacles. A race isn’t just a sequence of grip tests. You have to keep moving across distance, manage your effort, and find a way through the next obstacle when you’re already working hard.
That’s the kind of experience we want our training and events to prepare people for.
The course was built by people who know OCR
HartFit’s obstacle course and training facility were built by Race Ready Obstacles, the veteran-owned obstacle-building team behind The Midwest OCR. They build obstacles and grip apparatus used across the OCR community, and they built HartFit’s courses in both Illinois and Colorado.
That connection matters to us. The people who helped build races and equipment that shaped our Midwest OCR experience also helped us build the place where we now train athletes in Colorado.
Their work includes the kinds of grip and rig challenges that demand timing, movement, and problem-solving, not just raw strength. Our course brings that experience into our training ground in Peyton.
What is OCR?
Obstacle course racing, or OCR, combines running with physical obstacles and challenges. Racers may climb walls, traverse rigs, carry heavy objects, crawl, balance, grip, and adapt to varied terrain.
That mix is what makes OCR different from a standard road race or a workout built around one piece of equipment. You need a combination of:
Running and endurance
Grip strength and upper-body stamina
Functional strength
Carrying capacity
Balance and coordination
Obstacle skills and problem-solving
At HartFit, we train those elements together. We want athletes to practice moving from one demand to another, not just performing each skill while fresh and rested.
HYBRID fitness belongs in the workout, too
HartFit combines OCR with HYBRID fitness: workouts that pair running or other conditioning with functional exercise stations. If you’ve looked at HYROX or DEKA, you’ll recognize some of the training movements and structure.
That might mean running, then moving into a station that asks you to push or pull a weighted sled or tank, work on a rower or SkiErg, complete wall balls, perform RAM burpees, carry kettlebells, or lunge with a sandbag or wreck bag. Each movement challenges a different combination of strength, stamina, and pacing.
HYROX uses running segments followed by functional workout stations, while DEKA uses a series of functional fitness zones with different formats for running and non-running events.
At HartFit, those kinds of movements add another valuable dimension to our workouts and events. We can combine running and functional stations with obstacles, carries, grip challenges, and outdoor terrain. That creates a training experience where you have to manage effort across different kinds of work, rather than just repeat one movement or stay in one lane.
For athletes who compete in HYROX, DEKA, OCR, or other fitness events, this builds useful crossover. For people who don’t race at all, it provides a demanding and varied way to improve strength, conditioning, and overall capability.
HartFit is built for more than racers
You don’t have to be training for a Spartan Race or an OCR event to benefit from obstacle and HYBRID training.
Our workouts can help people who want to improve their fitness, build endurance, get stronger, or try something beyond a conventional gym routine. The same physical qualities—grip, strength, balance, conditioning, and the ability to keep moving—can matter across many parts of life and sport.
HartFit welcomes:
Military members and veterans seeking challenging, purposeful conditioning
First responders who want to build strength, endurance, and work capacity
Ranchers and other outdoor workers whose days call for physical capability
Athletes preparing for Farm Games and other demanding competitions
OCR racers training for their first event or their next podium
Adults looking for outdoor fitness and a new challenge
Kids developing confidence, coordination, strength, and movement skills
You don’t have to fit one type of athlete to train here. You need a reason to start and a willingness to keep working.
HartFit is not a traditional indoor gym
HartFit isn’t built around rows of treadmills, machines, and mirrors. We’re an outdoor training facility where people move across terrain, work on real obstacles, carry weight, and train in Colorado’s changing conditions.
We’re also not a Ninja Warrior gym. Ninja training and OCR can share skills, especially grip and obstacle movement, but they’re different experiences. Cross Country OCR includes running and distance as part of the event. HartFit workouts bring those demands together with obstacles, carries, functional strength, and HYBRID conditioning.
We’re not a running club, either. Running matters, but it’s one piece of the preparation. Our training is designed to help you move through the whole challenge: run, work, carry, climb, grip, recover, and keep going.
And we’re not a place where you need to “get in shape first.” Beginners can start with the skills and fitness they have now, then build from there.
Kids OCR at HartFit
HartFit also offers kids obstacle course training in Peyton. Kids can run, climb, balance, carry, and work through obstacles in an active outdoor setting.
The goal isn’t to make every child a competitive racer. It’s to help kids build strength, coordination, confidence, teamwork, and a positive relationship with movement. They can learn skills, test themselves, and see that being new at something is a normal part of getting better.
What GRIT means here
Grit isn’t just a word in a slogan. It shows up in the work: trying an obstacle again, learning how to pace yourself, listening to coaching, and continuing when the workout stops feeling easy.
HartFit is built around controlled adversity: physical challenges that ask you to adapt, make decisions, and work through discomfort. The goal isn’t hardship for its own sake. It’s building capability through effort, repetition, and experience.
The wind, the terrain, the obstacles, the carries, and the workout are all part of that experience. You don’t need to be fearless. You don’t need to be an expert. You just have to be willing to start.
